WEEE - Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment

  • The 6 million tonnes of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) disposed of in Europe in 1998 consisted of an estimated 3.6 million tonnes of metal, 1.2 million tonnes of plastic, up to 27,000 tonnes of lead and 8 tonnes of mercury, representing a huge resource loss and polluting effect.   • The volume of WEEE is increasing each year. WEEE includes computers and other IT and office equipment, vending machines, household appliances (such as fridges, washing machines, TVs, vacuum cleaners and hairdryers), and items such as electric toys and tools.

  • The increase in WEEE is partly due to the high rate of technological change in this sector, encouraging people to buy the latest versions before their old appliance has stopped functioning. In many cases old appliances may be refurbished, upgraded or directly passed on for use in another situation rather than being discarded. At present up to 10% of discarded electrical waste is used in refurbishment and reuse schemes (Source: WasteWatch).

  • The WEEE Directive was intended to be implemented by European member states by August 2004. However, the regulations did not come into force in the UK until January 2007, and full implementation of producer and distibutor responsibility for the treatment and recycling of WEEE commenced on 1st July 2007. Manufacturers are now responsible for the final disposal of their WEEE products.

Public Services

Jamie's also offers this service to private individuals.

If you have a computer that is no longer needed and you would like to see re-used, you can bring it to Jamie's any weekday between 10am and 3pm. You will be asked to pay £5 to help us cover the cost of handling your equipment.

We guarantee:

  • That your data storage equipment will be securely handled and wiped.
  • That we will aim to re-use equipment where possible.
  • That the income raised will go towards sustaining the project.
